How to Use

Prepare

Clean area of all oil, dirt, and grease. Roughen up surfaces for better adhesion. Wear provided gloves.

Apply

Knead pouch to ensure wrap is saturated. Open pouch and wrap the damaged area as tightly as possible without slipping. Use entire roll, applying at least 5 layers over the break itself, and 2-4 inches of wrap support on both sides of the break.

Secure

Apply included aluminum tape around wrap to secure in place while curing. Do not fully cover wrap with tape.

Cure

To cure with heat, either use a heat gun or turn the car on for 20 minutes. Product cures in 2 hours without heat. Remove aluminum tape after curing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature does ExhaustWeld Fiberglass Wrap withstand?

ExhaustWeld withstands temperatures up to 1100 F, the highest rating in the J-B Weld exhaust line. That covers the whole exhaust system, including hotter sections near the manifold, downpipe and Y-pipe where a muffler patch is not enough. The package contains one 2 in x 72 in resin-impregnated wrap along with gloves and aluminum tape.

How do I cure ExhaustWeld, and do I have to run the engine?

Heat speeds the cure but is not required. ExhaustWeld cures in about 20 minutes with heat, which usually means running the engine for 20 minutes or using a heat gun, or in about 2 hours without heat. Apply it above freezing. Secure the wrap with the included aluminum tape while it cures, but do not cover the wrap completely with tape.

How many layers of ExhaustWeld do I need, and can I apply a second roll?

Use at least 5 layers over the break itself, with 2 to 4 inches of wrap supported on each side of it. You can layer as much as you need, and you can apply a second roll over a cured repair for extra thickness. For a larger hole, back it with a piece of scrap metal or copper RTV silicone before wrapping.

Can ExhaustWeld be painted after it cures?

Yes. Use VHT high-temperature paint or a comparable high-heat coating; no other coating is recommended over the cured wrap. Paint also helps the repair last outdoors. Let the wrap cure fully before painting, and expect a burning smell for the first few heat cycles, which fades once the resin finishes off-gassing and both liner films have been removed.

Will ExhaustWeld repair a leaking exhaust flex pipe?

It can be used on flex pipe, but it is not the best answer. A rigid wrap over a section designed to move may squeak or bind, and flex pipe tends to keep leaking. Flex pipe is inexpensive, so replacing that section with solid exhaust pipe and clamps is the more durable repair. Do not leave an exhaust leak that can put fumes into the cabin.
