Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 2" and 1" FiberWeld Pipe Repair Casts?

Pipe size and wrap length. The 2 inch cast (38260) is a 2 in x 60 in wrap for pipes up to 2 inches in diameter; the 1 inch cast (38248) is a shorter 48 inch wrap for pipes up to 1 inch. Both are water activated, include an epoxy putty stick, hold up to 500 PSI water pressure and cure the same way.

What pipe materials does the 2" FiberWeld cast bond to?

Metal and plastic pipe, including copper, cast iron, galvanized steel, PVC and ABS, plus non-metal pipe such as terra cotta. The surface must be clean, dry and scuffed, since it grips a textured surface far better than a smooth one. Press the epoxy putty into the leak first and wrap over it rather than relying on the wrap alone to seal.

Can I use the 2" FiberWeld cast on a high-pressure or steam line?

No. The 500 PSI figure is a water pressure rating for plumbing, not a rating for pump discharge, hydraulic or steam service, and J-B Weld does not publish a temperature rating for this wrap. A hairline crack on the pressure side of a pump needs to be TIG welded; an epoxy or wrap repair there will blow out under load.

Is the 2" FiberWeld cast safe for a drinking water pipe?

It will seal a potable water pipe, but it has not been tested for NSF drinking water certification, so J-B Weld's tested option for lines you drink from is WaterWeld (8277). Either way, scuff, clean and dry the pipe before applying, and let the repair cure fully before turning the water back on.
