Frequently Asked Questions

Will PlasticBonder Black bond polyethylene or polypropylene?

Not reliably. It will not adhere to polyethylene, HDPE or LDPE at all, and on polypropylene it can give a cosmetic repair but not a structural one. That covers most poly fuel containers, injection-molded cases and rotomolded parts. Very few adhesives on the market bond these plastics at all, so a plastic welding kit is usually the answer.

How can I tell what type of plastic I am trying to repair?

There is no simple home test, but a useful rule of thumb applies: a rigid, hard plastic part is usually ABS and bonds well, while a flexible, waxy-feeling part is usually polypropylene or polyethylene and will not. PlasticBonder Black is intended for hard plastics only. Check for a recycling code or resin stamp molded into the part when you can.

How long does PlasticBonder Black take to set, and what temperature does it handle?

It sets in 15 minutes and cures in 30 minutes at a 1:1 mix ratio, reaching 3770 PSI tensile strength. It cures black, which is why it is the usual pick for automotive trim, ABS waste lines and HVAC drain parts. Support rates it to 250 degrees F after a full cure. It is not chemical or fuel resistant.

Can PlasticBonder Black be painted once cured?

Yes, once fully cured, using latex or enamel paint. Other coatings may not adhere well to the cured urethane. Scuff the cured surface lightly before painting. Because it cures black, many repairs on dark parts need no paint at all. The tan version (50133) is the identical product if you want a lighter base color.

How do I avoid air bubbles when mixing PlasticBonder?

Air bubbles during mixing are normal and do not weaken the bond. Stirring slowly rather than whipping the mix reduces them. Dispense both parts onto a mixing tray, fold them together until the color is uniform, then apply. If the cured material stays soft, the cause is an uneven or incomplete mix rather than trapped air.

How do I remove PlasticBonder from skin, and is it toxic?

For cured product on skin, an automotive hand cleaner followed by rubbing alcohol works best, and the rest wears off on its own. Clean up uncured material with acetone before it sets. PlasticBonder is considered non-toxic once fully cured, but it is not food-grade rated, so keep it off anything that contacts food or drinking water.

How should I store my syringe between uses?

Store the syringe nose-up rather than lying on its side. Keeping it upright helps prevent the tips from becoming contaminated, so the product stays ready for your next repair.
