Product Details

J-B Weld is the Original Cold Weld. It is a two-part epoxy system that creates strong, lasting repairs. With a 1:1 mixing ratio, it forms a permanent bond that can be shaped, tapped, filed, sanded, and drilled after curing. It sets in 4-6 hours to a dark gray color and fully cures in 15-24 hours for a hard bond. This product boasts a tensile strength of 6220 PSI and can withstand temperatures up to 550°F once fully cured.

How to Use

Prepare

Clean surface area of dirt, grease, oil, paint, or loose debris. For best results use a detergent or degreaser to first clean the surface, then roughen surface with file or coarse sandpaper to provide the best repair.

Mix

Squeeze equal parts from each tube onto a disposable surface and mix thoroughly.

Apply

Apply with appropriate tool in an even coat, weld bead or extruded shape as needed.

Dry

Sets in 4-6 hours. Cures in 15-24 hours. Allow 4-6 hours before handling and 15 hours (minimum) before putting object back in use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 10 oz Professional Size the same formula as the 2 oz twin tube?

Yes. J-B Weld 8281 is the same Original formula as the 8265S twin tube, just in a larger package. Both set in 4 to 6 hours, cure in 15 to 24 hours, reach 6220 PSI tensile strength, and handle up to 550F once cured. The 10 oz Professional Size is the largest package J-B Weld offers for the Original formula.

How long does it take to set and cure, and does temperature matter?

It sets in 4 to 6 hours and cures fully in 15 to 24 hours at about 70F. Colder conditions add time, so allow longer and never let the repair cure below freezing. Warmer temperatures speed the cure but also thin the mixed epoxy before it sets, so it can run on a vertical surface. Keep the parts supported and undisturbed for the full cure.

Can I apply a second layer to build up a repair?

Yes, and it is the recommended way to fill a deep area. Let the first layer cure fully, scuff it with 400 to 600 grit sandpaper to take the sheen off, clean off the dust, then apply the next layer. When filling low spots on a machined surface, keep the total fill depth to about 0.040 inch or less for a reliable repair.

Can I use J-B Weld Professional instead of welding on load-bearing parts?

No. It is an epoxy, not a structural weld replacement. Do not use it on brake components, wheel bearings, spindles or bearing races, vehicle lift anchors, pulley mounts, chair or table legs carrying body weight, or structural body panels such as cab corners. Parts under high load, rotation, or constant vibration should be welded or replaced. It is well suited to sealing, filling, and bonding parts that carry no structural load.

What surfaces does the Professional Size bond to?

It bonds metal, wood, ceramic, concrete, brick, fiberglass, and rigid plastics including PVC. Sand the surface rough and clean it with acetone first, and make sure it is bone dry. It does not bond well to polyethylene, polypropylene, flexible plastics, or rubber. Large openings, such as a 2 inch hole in a cast iron pipe, need a backing like screen material for the epoxy to build on.

Is cured J-B Weld electrically conductive?

No. J-B Weld describes its epoxy as an insulator rather than a conductor, even though the Original formula contains steel particles. Those particles are not continuous, so the cured epoxy does not carry current at low voltage. A strong magnet will still be attracted to it. J-B Weld does not publish dielectric strength figures, so do not rely on it as rated electrical insulation.

Can I paint over J-B Weld Original once it has cured?

Yes. Once fully cured, J-B Weld Original can be painted with enamel or latex paints, so your repair can blend in with the surrounding surface.

What kind of paint works on J-B Weld Original?

Enamel and latex paints both work well over cured J-B Weld Original. Make sure the repair has reached full cure before you paint.

How do I keep J-B Weld Original from sticking to areas I don't want it to bond to?

Apply a release agent to those areas before you start. Candle wax or Gulf Wax works well, as does a very thin coat of petroleum jelly. J-B Weld Original won't adhere where the release agent is applied.
