Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does KwikWeld set and how long until it is fully cured?

KwikWeld sets in about 6 minutes and reaches full cure in 4 to 6 hours. The syringe dispenses resin and hardener at a 1:1 ratio, so mix equal amounts thoroughly before applying. It cures dark gray. Because the working time is short, dry-fit and clamp your parts before you mix, and allow about two days before returning a repair to service with fluids.

What is the tensile strength of KwikWeld Syringe?

J-B Weld currently lists the KwikWeld Syringe at 4360 PSI tensile strength on its product page. Older packaging and some third-party listings show different figures; the current product page is the number to go by. Note this is a tensile rating for the cured bond, not a pressure rating for a sealed vessel or line.

What temperature can KwikWeld handle after it cures?

KwikWeld is rated to 300 degrees F once fully cured, and it is both water resistant and oil resistant. That makes it usable on cooling system housings running up to around 225 degrees F, provided you clean with acetone first and allow roughly two days before returning the part to service. For higher heat, the Original J-B Weld formula is rated to 550 degrees F.

How do I tell if my KwikWeld syringe has expired?

J-B Weld lists a three-year shelf life for its products when stored cool and dark. If one side dispenses normally while the other is dried out, or the mixed material is still tacky the next morning, the syringe is past usable life. The lot code printed on the package encodes the day and year of manufacture, so email support with that code and they can date it for you.

Can KwikWeld be used on flexible parts like a tire or rubber hose?

No. KwikWeld cures rigid and does not have the flexibility a tire or any flexing rubber part needs, so J-B Weld does not recommend it there. The same applies to soft vinyl, air mattresses and flexible hose. Epoxy also bonds poorly to rubber, canvas and leather generally. Use a purpose-made flexible adhesive for those repairs.

Can cured KwikWeld be sanded, drilled, and painted?

Yes. After curing, KwikWeld can be shaped, tapped, filed, sanded and drilled, and it takes most paints. It cures dark gray, so prime it if color matters. For filling a large gouge in a steel door or body panel, automotive body filler sands far more easily and is the better choice for that specific job.

Can I paint over KwikWeld once it has cured?

Yes. Once fully cured, KwikWeld can be painted with enamel or latex paints, so your repair can blend in with the surrounding surface.

What kind of paint works on KwikWeld?

Enamel and latex paints both work well over cured KwikWeld. Make sure the repair has reached full cure before you paint.

How should I store my syringe between uses?

Store the syringe nose-up rather than lying on its side. Keeping it upright helps prevent the tips from becoming contaminated, so the product stays ready for your next repair.
