Frequently Asked Questions

How thick can I pour in a single coat?

J-B Weld's directions do not state a maximum depth per coat. They say to pour the mixed epoxy in a zigzag motion and spread it with a rubber squeegee or brush, and that if you want a thicker application you should add additional layers. Build the thickness in coats, letting each one set before pouring the next.

How do I get the bubbles out?

Sweep a heat gun about 6 inches from the surface at a 45 degree angle to pop the bubbles. Move it across the whole pour rather than holding it in one spot. Mixing thoroughly for the full 5 to 7 minutes, and pouring in a room at 70 to 80F with humidity below 60 percent, keeps bubble formation down.

Is a finished bar top or table top safe for food contact?

J-B Weld does not publish a food-safe or FDA-compliance statement for ClearTop, so do not treat a finished top as a food-contact surface. It is described as a coating for tables and bar tops, which means plates, glasses and boards set on it rather than food placed directly on the epoxy. Contact J-B Weld if you need documentation for your use.

How much area will a gallon cover?

J-B Weld does not publish a fixed square foot figure. The product page has a size guide that converts your project's dimensions into the volume you need, in cubic inches, fluid ounces and gallons. Coverage depends on how thick you pour and on whether you lay down a thin seal coat before the flood coat. Measure your top and use the guide.

What conditions do I need for mixing and curing?

Clean and dry the surface of dust and debris, and work in a room between 70 and 80F with humidity below 60 percent. Mix equal parts resin and hardener, 1:1, for a full 5 to 7 minutes. Cover the project after pouring so dust stays off it. It sets in 6 to 9 hours and fully cures in 24 hours.

How much heat will the cured surface take?

J-B Weld does not publish a heat rating for cured ClearTop. It is a decorative coating for tables and bar tops, not a heat-resistant surface, so keep hot pans, skillets and anything straight off a burner off it, and use trivets and coasters. If you need a documented temperature limit for your application, contact J-B Weld directly.
