Dry

Cover project. It will set in 6-9 hours and fully cure in 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick is it, and how does it pour?

J-B Weld does not publish a viscosity figure for ClearTop. In practice it behaves as a self-leveling pour-on coating rather than a thin casting resin: you pour it onto the surface in a zigzag motion and use a rubber squeegee or brush to guide it out to the edges. For a thicker build, add layers instead of one deep pour.

How do I mix a 32 oz kit?

Mix equal parts, 1:1 by volume. For the full kit that is 16 oz of resin to 16 oz of hardener, so measure carefully if you are only mixing part of it. Stir thoroughly for 5 to 7 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom. It sets in 6 to 9 hours and fully cures in 24 hours in a 70 to 80F room.

Will it yellow over time, and can I use it outdoors?

J-B Weld does not publish UV stability or non-yellowing data for ClearTop on its own documentation, and the directions describe an indoor project done in a 70 to 80F room. Clear epoxies generally amber under sustained direct sunlight. Keep the piece indoors and out of a sunny window, or put a UV-stable clear topcoat over the cured epoxy.

Can I pour it over an oil-based stain?

J-B Weld's directions only call for a clean, dry surface free of dust and debris and do not address stained wood specifically. Let an oil-based stain cure fully for the time its own manufacturer states, wipe off any residue, and pour a test piece from the same stained stock before doing your real top. That avoids fisheyes and poor adhesion.

What size project is 32 oz right for?

J-B Weld does not publish a square foot figure, but 32 oz is the size for small work such as coasters, serving trays, a shelf, a picture frame or a small side table. The product page has a size guide that converts your dimensions into the volume needed. Measure first, since running short mid-pour leaves a visible line.

What is the best way to clear bubbles from a small pour?

Pop them with a heat gun held about 6 inches away, swept across the surface at a 45 degree angle. With a 32 oz batch the mixed epoxy warms quickly, so pour soon after the 5 to 7 minute mix, then go back over the surface once more after a few minutes as trapped air rises. Cover the piece while it sets.
